{"componentChunkName":"component---src-templates-event-js","path":"/events/2012-03-08","result":{"data":{"markdownRemark":{"html":"<p>The speaker will be Síle Lane, Campaigns Manager with the UK charity, Sense\nAbout Science, who are involved in a range of projects aimed at promoting\nscience and informing the public.</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do Department of Health guidelines say 2 Viagra tablets a week is\nsufficient?</li>\n<li>Are inarticulate children really twice as likely to be unemployed in\ntheir thirties?</li>\n<li>Can wheatgrass juice \"remove poisons from the blood stream\"?</li>\n<li>Should you buy MRSA resistant pyjamas before you go into hospital?</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Evidence matters in many of the decisions we make - as patients, consumers,\nvoters and citizens. The <em>Ask for Evidence</em> campaign encourages everyone,\nwhatever their experience, to ask for evidence for every claim made in\npolicies, newspaper articles, adverts or products. Over 50 organisations\njoined and leading voices of science, media, stage and comedy supported it.\nSíle will talk about the background to the campaign and how we learnt that\neven a small number of people asking questions can make a big difference.</p>\n<p>Síle Lane joined Sense About Science in February 2009 from a career as a stem\ncell researcher. Sense About Science is a UK charity founded to equip the\npublic to make sense of science and evidence. With a network of over 5,000\nscientists, scientific bodies, research publishers, policy makers, the public\nand the media we promote public understanding of evidence and challenge\npseudoscience. We work with scientists to share the tools of scientific\nreasoning to help people make sense of current discussions rather than taking\nthem back to school.
