Dr Hughes lectures in health psychology, is president elect of the Psychological Society of Ireland and is chair of its Health Psychology Group. Dr Hughes will describe how alternative practitioners capitalise on consumers' attitudes to health, disease, medication and doctors in their efforts to market their services. He will also examine how the influence of psychological stress on illness and recovery is commonly used to bolster claims about miracle cures.
